January or later, it’s never too late to start that New Year detox! Not only do bad habits like smoking, drinking and indulging in too much sugar give your skin that dull, tired look, but the constant daily exposure to environmental stressors and pollutants (e.g. car exhaust fumes) does untold damage to the skin, which is why it's so important that you give it as much TLC when you can.
Remember: The products you use should vary depending on whether you prefer to use them for short bursts during the daytime or apply them overnight as, if you sleep in a product that's quite heavy, when you wake up and remove it, it can leave temporary bags or sagging where it's weighed down on the skin. When the aim of the treatment is to make you look and feel better, with brighter, fresher and more toned looking skin, that's definitely something you want to avoid.
Here are some of my favourite products to revitalise your face and body:
EVENING / FACE
Best Therapy Treatment: Caudalie Polyphenols C15 Overnight Detox Oil (30ml / £29)
Worn overnight, this revitalizing oil will detoxify your skin, resulting in a smoother, brighter and healthier-looking complexion. Formulated with regenerating Grapeseed Oil and Polyphenols, it helps to repair any skin damage caused by common pollutants and life stressors by supporting natural cell renewal and promoting detoxification. Essentially, the dry oil penetrates deep into skin to flush out free-radicals, dead cells, and other impurities - exactly what you need to create the perfect base for applying makeup. If you apply the makeup on top of residues like thes, it can lead to the makeup clogging the pores even more, resulting in unsightly blackheads and large pores.
Selen says 'I love this 100 % plant-based lightweight oil as not only does it give great results but it's also suitable for all skin types, including sensitive and oily skins, and can be used on its own or under moisturiser.'
Best Treatment Mask: Caudalie Instant Detox Mask (£22)
This beautiful pink mask is lightly fragranced, with soothing botanicals including lavender, parsley and gorgeous chamomile that help to purify city-stressed skin and all forms of free-radical damage. Formulated with a 99.3% natural clay base, it draws away impurities and toxins, leaving the skin feeling super soft, cleaner and brighter, without stripping it of its important natural oils. After use, you'll also notice that your skin's texture has become more refined, with tightened pores and a more even complexion.
Selen says 'This product is super quick and simple to work with, and you don’t need to use a lot it to get good results. Simply apply a thin layer to the face twice a week, leave for 5 -10mins (it drys super quickly) and then rinse it off with warm water.'
Best For Relaxing & Cleansing: Elemental Herbology Metal Detox Bath & Body Oil (£28)
This bath oil contains Grapefruit, Geranium, Rosemary and Juniper Berry, which work together to encourage better cell renewal and firmer feeling skin by helping to reduce fluid retention, stimulate circulation and shift toxins that, if left to their own devices, can manifest as cellulite.
Selen says 'I love how this relaxing bath oil doubles up as a body oil. It's clear that Elemental Herbology have put a lot of thought into the ingredients they use, not only ensuring that the product smells and feels lovely, but also that the ingredients (inc. Sweet Almond, Jojoba and Peach Kernel) work together to really benefit and moisturise the skin. After using it, my skin felt revived and energised, not to mention super soft and nourished.'
Best Exfoliating Body Brush: Elemis Body Detox Skin Brush (£21)
Dry body brushing is an easy way to stimulate your blood circulation and lymphatic system, helping to eliminate toxins. The natural cactus bristles on this brush exfoliate the skin, removing dead skin cells to reveal softer feeling skin, with improved texture. Brilliant for naturally reducing the appearance of cellulite.
It's important to brush in the right direction (always towards the heart), and in circular motions starting with the feet and working upwards. If you have extremely sensitive skin, use the brush on damp skin.
Best Body Moisturiser: Arbonne Rescue and Renew Detox Body Lotion (327ml / £35)
This moisturiser is made from entirely vegan ingredients and safe for all skin types, even sensitive skin. The Alfalfa and chicory extracts help to improve the skin's appearance, leaving it feeling smoother and more toned than before; whilst the Shea Butter and Vitamin B5 work together to banish dry skin; and the Turmeric and Ginger Root extract help to eradicate any signs of dull, lackluster and tired skin. Plus, if that wasn't enough, it also contains detoxifying Dandilion extract, which is renowned for imporving overall skin health. For an added boost, why not drink a cup of fresh dandilion and ginger tea to detoxify the body from the inside and the outside?! It works wonders.
Selen says 'I love the aroma of this hydrating and detoxifying body moisturiser. It's formulated with pure, aromatic essential oils including Orange, Lavender, Star Anise and Bergamot that help to soothe and calm stressed skin. This product really impressed me because, even after the first use, my skin was noticibly smoother, softer, hydrated and brighter. The more frequently you use it, the better the results.'
Best Daytime Face Serum: Clarins Detox Booster (15ml / £30.00)
This 'genius' booster protects your skin against environmental stressors and pollution. Since using it, my skin feels softer, smooth and looks clearer and brighter too.
One of the reasons why this product works so well is that it contains green coffee extract - renowned for its detoxifying, purifying and radiance-reviving qualities. Plus, it's very easy to use - you don't even need to think about it. Simply add 3-5 drops to your existing moisturiser, face mask or foundation for an intensive, detoxifying boost. Use it as little or as often, depending on how tired or stressed your skin is.
