The Best Brightening Masks For Glowing Skin

by Selen Hurer

Worried about tired, stressed, dull and hungover skin? We have the answer. Here are A-List make-up artist Selen Hurer's favourite skin-rejuvinating masks to restore your skin's healthy glow in time for the weekend.

Selen says ‘It always surprises me how many people are intimidated to try beauty masks – they don’t know which ones will work or even if they’re worth trying – but, trust me, if you pick one to suit your skin type and apply it regularly, the right beauty mask can work wonders.’

‘There are many different types of brightening masks on the market today. I particularly like using creamier hydrating masks containing high quantities of the antioxidant Vitamin C as they’re fantastic for rejuvenating and protecting the skin, and reducing inflammation whilst promoting collagen formation. This is a more subtle approach but, if you’re in need of something slightly stronger, there are some great masks available that act in a similar way to a light peel. Containing acids (e.g. glycolic, salicylic and various fruit acids), they exfoliate the skin, increase cell turnover, reduce pigmentation and dark spots, resulting in brighter looking skin. If you do opt for one of these products, it’s essential to wear sunscreen or an SPF moisturizer after use to protect the skin as, following application of the mask, the skin will become more sensitive to pollutants and other free-radicals.’

Here are my top picks to help you to achieve that radiant movie star complexion in no time.

1. REN – FLASH RINSE 1 MINUTE FACIAL (75ml / £32.00)
A lovely clean, chemical-free product that's easy to apply and perfect for almost every skin type. It's easy to see why this mask has been voted "Skincare Superstar" by Grazia magazine and "Best Mask" by Women's Health, among others. Formulated from specially secreted Boswellic Acid from Boswellia Serrata Bark, not only does it help to treat photo-aging and fine lines, but it also contains potent water-activated Vitamin C, which neutralises dull grey skin instantly, leaving your skin feeling firmer, visibly smoother, brighter and more toned; and Glycogen Magnesium - a Marine Glucose Mineral that acts quickly to boost your skin's energy and radiance for a refreshed, youthful looking complexion.

Make sure you give this mask a good shake before use as, although it smells fairly pleasant, the texture feels quite grainy. This will ensure a smooth, even application.

Selen says 'I honestly didn’t think a mask could do a lot in a minute but this worked like a treat! Although the mask left my skin feeling slightly tight, the dry skin around my nose completely disappeared. My skin felt clean, smooth and looked brighter, creating the perfect base for make-up application. As this product contains exfoliating acids I recommend using a moisturiser with SPF to ensure that the skin remains well nourished and protected.'

Recommended for: Suitable for all skin types except those prone to sensitivity. A great quick fix if you’re pushed for time.

TP Verdict:

2. PETER THOMAS ROTH'S CAMU CAMU POWER CX30 VITAMIN C BRIGHTENING SLEEPING MASK (100ml / £60.00)
This sleeping mask is an absolute must-have. It has a lovely creamy texture that melts into the skin and contains camu camu berry - a potent super fruit that offers 30 times the Vitamin C of an orange and powerful absorption properties - in addition to Avocado Oil, Hyaluronic Acid, Soluble Collagen, Sodium PCA, Pro-Vitamin B5, Allantoin and Aloe Vera to help to soothe, nourish and moisturize the look of dry, dehydrated skin while you sleep. This product is a little bit expensive but a little goes a long way so it's definitely worth it.

Selen says 'My skin felt plumper, firmer, brighter and noticably hydrated. Pigmentation and fine lines appeared less visible and my skin tone became more even. A great all-rounder!'

Recommended for: Great for drier, uneven skin types.

TP Verdict:

3. RODIAL - SUPER ACIDS X-TREME HANGOVER MASK (75ml / £45.00)
A great product if you’re concerned about pigmentation, open pores or uneven skin tone. This clay mask deeply cleanses the skin, drawing out impurities and gently exfoliating it. It also contains Pronalen Fruit and Glycolic Acids which eliminate dead skin cells and retextures the skin; and is formulated using Laracare and probiotic technology. Fantastic for anti-aging and boosting hydration.

Selen says 'When applied, the mask left a nice tingly sensation on the skin and, after use, my skin looked really fresh, felt super clean and my skin tone definitely became more even. I also noticed that my pores looked smaller and any fine lines became less visible; plus my acne scarring appeared softer and the skin rebalanced. This was espeically noticable on my T-zone, which became mattified, and my cheeks, which felt softer and more hydrated.'

Recommended for: Combination / oily and non-sensitive skin types

TP Verdict:

4. GREEN PEOPLE VITAMIN MASK (50ML / £16)
Best budget buy. This antioxidant-rich, organic leave-on cream mask is fantastic for all skin types, especially those with dry or sensitive skin as it contains no nasty chemicals, irritants or preservatives.

Formulated with shea butter, evening primrose oil and avocado, it naturally nourishes and softens the skin. Plus, the seaweed helps to regenerate the skin and stimulates collagen production to deliver a long-lasting firming effect; and the Tara Bush is rich in polysaccharides which, renowned for their strong water-retaining properties, is an effective, natural way to encourage plump, healthy looking skin; whilst the Everlasting Flower contains fatty acids which have antioxidant and moisturizing properties and anti-inflammatory properties that help to protect and soothe sensitive skin.

Selen says 'I loved the smell of this deluxe, non-drying mask.  It left my skin radiant, clean and really healthy looking. My skin felt soft and nourished.'

Recommended for: All skin types. Particularly good for dry and/or sensitive skin.

TP Verdict:

If you have very sensitive skin or are prone to skin irritations such as acne, psoriasis and eczema, we recommend avoiding the acidic masks as they may exacerbate the problem.
